Opening Speech Summer in JAPAN 2024

Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed students, parents, and distinguished guests,

Ohayo gozaimasu! As the president of Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU), it is an honor to address you today at the opening of the Summer in JAPAN 2024 program.

Let us embark on a journey of discovery—a journey that unites hearts, transcends borders, and celebrates the magic of education. Allow me to draw parallels between the mission of our APU and the purpose of your remarkable SIJ program.

(1)   Global Citizens:

At APU, we believe in nurturing global citizens who embrace diversity, seek mutual understanding, and contribute to a better world. Just like the SIJ program, we recognize that education extends beyond textbooks. It is about fostering curiosity, empathy, and resilience. Our students, hailing from 110 countries, learn side by side, sharing their unique perspectives and creating a vibrant tapestry of cultures.

(2)   Cross-Cultural Bridges:

The Summer in JAPAN program mirrors our commitment to multicultural cooperation and collaboration. When students from different backgrounds come together, they build bridges of friendship and understanding. Whether it’s learning English, computer programming, or performing arts, these connections transcend mere words. They create a symphony of shared experiences, laughter, and growth.

(3)   Exploring New Horizons:

Just as SIJ participants explore Oita’s rich culture, our students explore Beppu—a city known for its hot springs, hospitable local population, and vibrant festivals. We encourage them to step outside their comfort zones, study abroad, and engage with the world. These adventures shape their character, broaden their perspectives, and prepare them to be leaders in an ever-changing global landscape. You are doing the same with your SIJ 2024 and, hopefully, in your life after the program.

So, my fellow adventurers, as you set sail on this summer voyage, remember that education is a treasure chest waiting to be unlocked by you. Each lesson, each friendship, and each shared moment is a gem that enriches our lives.

Thank you, arigato gozaimasu, for inviting me to celebrate this special occasion. May the Summer in JAPAN program ignite passions, broaden horizons, and inspire us all to be lifelong learners.

Do your best, ganbatte kudasai, and let the magic of education guide your way!

Opening Speech Summer in JAPAN 2024

It is my pleasure and honor to address you, the participants in Summer in JAPAN (SIJ).  I wish you well on your journey through this wonderful program. Through SIJ’s unique “Hirotsuru Method” of learning you will be able, if you apply yourself diligently, to quickly improve your abilities in the four essential English skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening.  This will help you in the process of fulfilling your future dreams in the areas of personal enrichment and academic success and it will help you become a global citizen.

Working with international and Japanese Teaching Assistants, which include two from Akita International University (AIU) this summer, will give you a chance to internationalize your educational experience and promote your advancement into becoming a lifelong learner. At AIU we encourage our students to become global leaders.  One of the chief traits of a global leader is a willingness to continue the process of learning throughout one’s life.  The world is complex and constantly changing.  You must strive to become a lifelong learner in order to deal with the ever-changing circumstances of our world and society.

I will conclude with a quote from Alfred North Whitehead, a famous mathematician and philosopher.  He said, “The purpose of education is not to fill a vessel but to kindle a flame.”  Education should not simply stuff your mind with a bunch of facts and figures.  Education should motivate you to become a lifelong learner, someone who finds fulfillment in discovery and experience, and an individual who will be willing to use their education for the betterment of not only themselves but the world.   Enjoy your time at SIJ.  Take full advantage of all the activities and possibilities for learning.  Let your experiences this summer help to make you the best that you can be.
