【SIJ 2024 プログラム概要】

2024年7月31日(水)から8月14日(水)に、大分市にて、大分市出身のヴァイオリニスト廣津留すみれが廣津留真理と2012年に共同設立した非営利の教育団体Sumer in JAPAN (略称 SIJ) のサマースクールが開催されます。


12年目の今年は、7名のハーバード大学生と卒業生のチームをはじめ、アシスタントメンバーとして、大分県からもAPU立命館アジア太平洋大学の留学生のみなさん、大分大学医学部のみなさん、さらに廣津留すみれ氏が特任准教授をつとめるAIU国際教養大学(秋田県)からもバイリンガルの日本人大学生が参加、グローバルな教育環境が大分に出現します。彼らが協力して、全国・世界から大分市に集うトップクラスの小中高校生に、英語でコンピュータサイエンス、スピーチ、作文、パフォーミングアーツを教えます。同時に、コミュニケーション力、交渉力、高度なプレゼンテーションのスキルもハーバード生から直々に学ぶ絶好の機会となっています。

また期間中は、11年目を迎えるSIJ廣津留すみれクラシックコンサートもあり、一般のみなさまにも広く愛されています。

ハーバード大学生のキャンパスライフ、アメリカ生活や研究内容を子どもたちに語るプレゼンテーションは12年目、毎年子どもたちから質問が英語で飛び交い、海外留学への関心の高さがうかがえます。

今年2024年の特別プログラムは、ハーバード卒の海外トップ校入試コンサルタントによる海外トップ大学合格の秘訣と実践レッスンです。こちらもオールイングリッシュで行われます。

英語セミナー指導の後、ハーバード生らは、大分県の４日間の観光ツアーで、和食や温泉、禅修行などを体験し、友情を育みます。この12年の間、SIJに参加したハーバード生の中には、新婚旅行で大分を再び訪れたり、家族の旅行先として大分を選ぶハーバード生もおり、日本で就職した者さえいます。

【期間中の各種イベント】

①SIJ英語サマースクール (8/3-8/9)
日本全国、海外からトップ小中高生が集う７日間オールイングリッシュの学びの場。
今年はコンピュータサイエンス、スピーチ、パフォーミングアーツの３つがテーマ。
8/3が各大学の魅力が伝わる開会式、8/9が生徒さんら感動の最終発表会でフィナーレとなります。

②留学説明会 (8/3, 8/7) 
ハーバード卒の海外トップ校入試アメリカ人コンサルタントが海外トップ大学合格の秘訣を語る貴重な講演です。

③廣津留すみれと仲間たちコンサート (8/5) 
今年で11回目を迎える廣津留すみれのクラシックコンサート、ヴァイオリンの音色をご堪能ください。ハーバードのメンバーによる二胡の演奏もお楽しみに。チケットのお求めはこちらから

④大分市主催の市民対象の交流会SWIM (7/20, 8/10)
ハーバード、APU、 AIU、大分大学のみなさんがSIJ代表理事の廣津留真理氏と共に100名の大分市の小中学生に英作文と英語スピーチを効率的に教える、大分市主催の6年目となる教育プログラムです。（100名は厳正なる抽選で選ばれています）

⑤ハーバード生に大分県の良さを伝えるツアーTouch & Feel Japan (8/11-8/14)
大分の食材、伝統料理から、温泉や神社仏閣にいたるまで、大分県にまた戻って来たくなるような４日間ツアーを毎年12年間開催、ハーバード生に大好評です。

 

【廣津留　すみれ　略歴】
大分市出身。高校在学中に NY カーネギーホールにてソロデビュー。ハーバード大学(学士)卒業、ジュリアード音楽院(修士)修了。世界的チェリストのヨーヨー・マと度々の共演を経て、米国にて演奏活動を拡大。The Knights のメンバーとしてグラミー賞 2022にノミネート。日本でも東京フィルハーモニー交響楽団や関西フィルハーモニー管弦楽団などとの共演や『徹子の部屋』『題名のない音楽会』などに出演。国際教養大学特任准教授、成蹊大学客員准教授。『羽鳥慎一モーニングショー』金曜レギュラー。著書に『超・独学術』など多数。


【廣津留　真理　略歴】
英語教育30余年。高等学校教諭一種(英語)免許取得。早稲田大学卒業。ディリーゴ英語教室、オンライン英語プリスクールGood Habits、一般社団法人Summer in JAPANの３つの法人の代表をつとめる。著書13冊・翻訳書1冊、英語アプリも開発。


Summer in JAPAN(SIJ)とは
廣津留真理、廣津留すみれ親子が2012年に設立した非営利の教育団体。理事には大分県出身の元Google日本法人代表取締役社長も名を連ねる。生涯を通じた主体的学び・自己実現・社会貢献、の３つをモットーに、ハーバード大学生を講師陣として大分市に招聘して夏季インターナショナルスクールを実現、子どもたちに英語プラス好きと得意を伸ばすきっかけをつくっている。SIJをきっかけに留学した生徒さんも多い。

[SIJ 2024 Program Overview]

From July 31, 2024 (Wed) to August 14, 2024 (Wed), in Oita City, the nonprofit organization Summer in JAPAN (SIJ), co-founded in 2012 by violinist Sumire Hirotsuru and Mari Hirotsuru, will host its summer school.

In its 12th year, SIJ will feature a team of seven current and former Harvard University students. Additionally, assistant members include international students from Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU) in Oita, medical students from Oita University, and bilingual Japanese students from Akita International University (AIU), where Sumire Hirotsuru is the associate professor. This diverse group will create a global educational environment in Oita, teaching top-tier elementary, middle, and high school students from across Japan and the world. They will cover subjects such as computer science, public speaking, writing, and performing arts in English, offering a rare opportunity for students to learn advanced communication, negotiation, and presentation skills directly from Harvard students.

During the program, the 11th annual Sumire Hirotsuru Classical Concert will also be held, a beloved event among the general public.

The presentations by Harvard students about campus life, American living, and their research will engage students in English, showcasing their high interest in studying abroad.

This year’s special program includes practical lessons and tips for getting into top overseas universities, led by a Harvard graduate and top school admissions consultant. This session will also be conducted entirely in English.

After the English seminars, Harvard students will enjoy a four-day tour of Oita Prefecture, experiencing Japanese cuisine, hot springs, and Zen practices, fostering friendships. Over the past 12 years, some Harvard students have revisited Oita for their honeymoons, family trips, or even to work in Japan.

[Events During the Program]

  1. SIJ English Summer School (Aug 3-9)

    • A seven-day, all-English learning experience for top elementary, middle, and high school students from Japan and abroad.
    • This year’s themes include computer science, speech, and performing arts.
    • The opening ceremony on Aug 3 will highlight various universities, and the final presentation on Aug 9 will showcase the students’ achievements.

  2. Study Abroad Information Sessions (Aug 3, 7)

    • Valuable lectures by an American consultant and Harvard graduate on how to get into top overseas universities.

  3. Sumire Hirotsuru and Friends Concert (Aug 5)

    • The 11th annual classical concert by Sumire Hirotsuru. Enjoy the violin melodies and performances by Harvard members. Tickets available here.

  4. Oita City SWIM (July 20, Aug 10)

    • The sixth year of an educational program where Harvard, APU, AIU, and Oita University members, along with SIJ representative Mari Hirotsuru, teach English writing and speech to 100 elementary and middle school students from Oita City. (Participants are selected through a strict lottery system.)

  5. Touch & Feel Japan Tour for Harvard Students (Aug 11-14)

    • A four-day tour introducing the charm of Oita, from its local cuisine and traditional dishes to hot springs and temples. A highlight of the past 12 years, it’s a favorite among Harvard students.

[Sumire Hirotsuru Profile]

  • From Oita City. Made her solo debut at Carnegie Hall, NY, while still in high school. Graduated from Harvard University (BA) and completed her master’s at Juilliard School. She has performed with world-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma and expanded her performance activities in the US. Nominated for a Grammy Award in 2022 as a member of The Knights. She has collaborated with Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, Kansai Philharmonic Orchestra, and appeared on popular TV programs. Special associate professor at Akita International University, visiting associate professor at Seikei University, and a regular on ‘Hatori Shinichi Morning Show’. Author of many books, including ‘Super Self-Study Techniques’.

[Mari Hirotsuru Profile]

  • Over 30 years of experience in English education. Holds a teaching license for high school English. Graduated from Waseda University. President of Dirigo English School, online preschool Good Habits, and nonprofit Summer in JAPAN. Author of 13 books and one translation, and developer of an English app.

About Summer in JAPAN (SIJ)

Founded in 2012 by Mari and Sumire Hirotsuru, SIJ is a nonprofit organization. The board includes a former president of Google Japan from Oita Prefecture. With lifelong learning, self-actualization, and social contribution as its mottos, SIJ invites Harvard students to Oita City each summer to create an international school. SIJ inspires children to enhance their English skills and discover their passions and strengths. Many students who participated in SIJ have studied abroad.
