Opening Messages

Mayor of Oita City: Shinya Adachi
Opening Speech Summer in JAPAN 2025
Welcome to Summer in JAPAN 2025.
Today I would like to extend my congratulations on the opening of the Summer in JAPAN 2025. To all participants joining us from across Japan and around the world, as well as SIJ instructors and staff, welcome to Oita City. On behalf of the citizens of Oita, I warmly welcome you all. I would like to express my deepest respect and appreciation to Ms. Mari Hirotsuru, President of Summer in JAPAN, Ms. Sumire Hirotsuru, Co-Founder, and all members of the organizing team for their tremendous efforts in making this summer school possible.
Furthermore, I wish to extend my sincere gratitude to Ms. Sumire Hirotsuru for her continued contributions to our city – not only as a member of the Oita City Board of Education but also as an Ambassador for Promoting Oita’s Attractions. Her support across various municipal initiatives is truly appreciated.
This year marks the 13th year of SIJ. Over the next seven days, under the direct guidance of students from Harvard University, participants will engage in learning across a wide range of subjects including English, public speaking, theater, and computer science.
Founded in 1636, Harvard University is the oldest institution of higher education in the United States and is globally renowned for excellence across many fields. Studying alongside its students and alumni presents a rare and valuable opportunity. During your stay, I encourage you to enjoy Oita’s rich natural beauty, deep history, vibrant culture, and delicious cuisine. We would be honored if you would share the charm of our city with the world.
In closing, I offer my heartfelt wishes for the continued growth and success of Summer in JAPAN, and for the health, happiness, and future achievements of everyone here today.
