What is SIJ Okayama?

Summer in JAPAN, which has long had Oita, Japan as its sole destination for participants from all over the world, will extend its branches to a second location in Okayama, Japan in commemoration of its fifth anniversary in 2017. Many thanks go to Okayama’s prefectural and municipal governments, media companies, and, last but not least, Mr. Yasuharu Ishikawa, President of the Ishikawa Foundation and CEO of Stripe International INC., for making SIJ Okayama possible.

President Yasuharu Ishikawa, Ishikawa Foundation

We see more and more gaps between the world and Japan as well as Tokyo and Okayama.
Our mission is to provide a wide variety of learning opportunities by integrating local children in Okayama with first-class college students from all over the world here at SIJ.
I believe this program will change our students for the better, turn their parents’ eyes to the future, and offer local volunteer college students unforgettable experiences. I look forward to seeing SIJ alumni who would like to shape the future of Okayama.

President and Founder Mari Hirotsuru, Summer in JAPAN

In commemoration of five years of Summer in JAPAN (SIJ), we have decided to extend our reach to Okayama. I sincerely appreciate all the efforts of the people of Okayama, and in particular Mr. Ishikawa, for his support.
Thanks to the development of technology, it has become much easier for people who aim for the same goal to cooperate across borders and work as a team. Our mission is to facilitate and develop cutting edge ideas, and create new values beneficial for society. I hope SIJ Okayama will be a fun place to instill in local children and residents a love for learning.

Feedback

The Harvard students were very kind so we felt comfortable asking them questions. Learning how to write reports and essays in English will be useful to me. What I learned will even help me improve my Japanese writing, so I am very thankful.(SIJ2016)
I am very interested in programming, but it was difficult for me at first. In this seminar, block construction was offered as an exciting hands-on study method. I really enjoyed it, and it will be useful for my programming in the future. With a variety of programming languages being involved, this method will be a solid foundation for me.(SIJ2016)
