Opening Messages

Governor of Oita Prefecture: Kiichiro Sato

Opening Speech Summer in JAPAN 2024

Hello everyone, I am Kiichiro Sato, the governor of Oita Prefecture. I would like to thank those of you who come from near and far for participating in Summer in Japan 2024. Welcome to Oita Prefecture!

I would also like to pay my respects to President Hirotsuru and the many others who have worked tirelessly, with the cooperation of Harvard University and other international students, to provide an assortment of experiences that will allow our future generations to gain a global perspective.

Humanity has entered an era of uncertainty. The increase in frequency and severity of natural disasters such as earthquakes and heavy rains—the sudden evolution of AI technology…and yet during these uncertain times, programs such as Summer in Japan 2024 provide not only an opportunity for learning English, but also a chance to learn skills that will be vital for living in our future global society.

Therefore, I ask that the elementary, junior high, and high school students who participate in this program use this opportunity to challenge yourselves, learn more about the world, improve your communication skills, and be flexible thinkers. Be curious. I hope this will be just the first step of you all becoming global citizens.

As for the university student teachers participating in this program, I ask that you please bestow your knowledge and experiences upon the children also participating in this event. Help them develop a global perspective. But on a lighter note, please also enjoy Oita’s local cuisine, history, culture, and abundant nature.

As a final word of encouragement, I would like to say that I hope that Summer in Japan 2024 proves to be a fruitful experience for all of you. Thank you very much!
